I like most business men, dislike spending my money on Commercial insurance, as it can be costly. I understand the importance however in these times of credit crisis and the global economy slowing down, every penny counts. It is not just the commercial insurance but it is all the legal insurances combined I find hard to cover. I pay public liability insurance along with insurance to cover the vehicles in my fleet and I pay insurance for my offices and warehouse. The commercial insurance covers my public liability, employee liability, Professional indemnity insurance, business building insurance, business equipment and specialist tools cover. Taking in to account how much is covered by my Commercial insurance, I suppose it is good value for money.

I watched my friend who was a CEO of a huge multinational company, be drawn through court because he allowed his commercial insurance to expire, and one of his employees was killed whilst working at the company address. The company were taken to court by the widow and by the health and safety executive for gross misconduct and man slaughter. As the CEO he had a duty of care to ensure the Commercial insurance was paid for and current. Although he had written an email to his sectary about renewing the insurance, because he received no reply it was seen by the health and safety executive that he should have followed up the request until he received a suitable reply.

As he did not have the funds to pay, he registered bankrupt and the assets were sold by the tax office.

All in all, twenty eight people lost their jobs because the commercial insurance had not been renewed. It is unfair for the unemployed workers that someone acting unlawfully could have such an effect on the good honest workers, but the law is the law and we all have to live with our actions. I always personally ensure the Commercial insurance is renewed and I have a certificate up on my wall to remind me how important it really is.
